SHORT WORKSHOPS

Science Education and Entertainment: Edutainment? Paul Zaloom leads this workshop on science education that is designed for both science and general education teachers. We explore unconventional ways to teach scientific principles, finding the common ground between science, art and comedy. Zaloom shows teachers some fun and easy, safe and non-toxic, hands on science demonstrations, using audience participation and lots of humor.

For one to 500 teachers; 2 hours.

LONGER WORKSHOPS/RESIDENCIES:

YAK! A Childrens' Theater Creation Experience
Zaloom can work with up to twenty 6 to 11 year old children (with one to two assistants that you provide), creating an original, highly comedic theater piece that culminates in at least one public performance. Children learn about free association, improvisation, applying play to work, joke creation, performance DOs and DON’Ts, and other theatrical, problem solving, and art making skills.
For up to twenty children and two adults you provide.

5 to 7 days, 5 hours a day plus performance(s).

SPEECHES FOR TEACHERS, STUDENTS, GENERAL PUBLIC

Ways of Learning
In this talk, Zaloom discusses ways that we learn and how new approaches to education can make a huge difference in the way children can be engaged. The relationship between science and art is examined in detail, and the idea of “thoughtless thinking”, a.k.a. being present while brainstorming, is described in depth. Can be followed by a Q and A or general discussion.

Humor as Tool like Hammer!
In this talk, the subject of humor and its relation to so-called “serious” topics is explored in full. Using a series of odd, weird, and funny photographs Zaloom has taken in his touring across the country, he reveals how making people laugh can change the way they think, all while making this audience laugh. In a lively, fast paced speech, Zaloom vigorously defends the much derided and disrespected occupation of humorist and explains why humor is essential to human progress and survival.
